Prime Minister: Justin Trudeau Leader of the Official Opposition: Stephen Harper Langley-Aldergrove MP: Mark Warawa
The overall results ( i.e. Liberals 1st, Conservatives 2nd, NDP 3rd, Bloc 4th, Green 5th) did not surprise me, given the survey results just before the election. However, I did not expect the Liberals to win by as wide of a margin as they did. It was very shocking to turn on the television as the first few ballots were being counted and see the Liberals with thirty or so seats, and all of the other parties with none. Though I am glad that Harper was not re-elected, I was hoping that the Liberals would have a minority, so that they wouldn't have too much power. I was also hoping that the Green party would get a few more seats, because I liked the tone of their campaign ( yes, not very rational, but many people vote based on intuition). I feel that the polls released during the week or so before the election had a substantial influence on the actual results, due to the number of anyone-but-Harper voters who were trying to guess whether the Liberals or the NDP had a better chance of beating the Conservatives. Besides not screw up too spectacularly, the only thing that I am hoping ( and somewhat realistically expecting) the new government to do is to replace our first-past-the-post system with something better, like preferential ballot. I think that B.C. will benefit from the results, because we will get more funding for transit( assuming the Liberals follow through with their promises).
Other thoughts:
-Wow, that was a really long campaign
-Will the school still smell the same after pot is made legal, or were all those ads true?
